Silica fume is typically added to concrete for flatwork applications to
improve durability. A side benefit of using silica fume in this application
is the opportunity for fast-track finishing. Because silica-fume concrete
does not bleed, it can be finished immediately after placing without the
customary waiting period for the bleeding to be completed. Crews can place
and finish more silica-fume concrete in a day because they don't have wait
for the concrete to harden to complete the finishing process.
