The improvement in the structure of the transition zone can be seen when broken test specimens are examined. Usually for high-strength, silica-fume concrete, most of the aggregate particles will be fractured, very few will be pulled out of the matrix. The better bonding of the aggregate into the matrix results in higher concrete strength and modulus.
