Silica fume is a byproduct of producing silicon metal or ferrosilicon alloys
in an electric-arc furnace. This photo, taken before environmental
regulations were put into effect, shows silica fume being discharged from a
smelter. Today, no silica fume is discharged to the environment in the
United States.
